before, but Patrick Ryan has one up on them: the first version of his solo restaurant, Port Fonda, was underground in an Airstream trailer. Naturally, Patrick started cooking at a young age, and he credits his mother and her parents with instilling in him a love of food and cooking. One of his first memories as a chef was making cinnamon apples with bacon in a cast-iron skillet and fresh-picked green beans with country ham, as Patrick recalls it being one of his grandfather&#8217;s favorite dishes.</p><p>After working around the United States in a variety of kitchens, Patrick returned home to Kansas City; as he puts it, he &#8220;saw Kansas City as a great opportunity to do something new and exciting for the area&#8230;I wanted to become part of the growing food and drink community.&#8221; After becoming frustrated with his early efforts, Patrick looked to his time at Rick Bayless&#8217; Frontera Grill as being one of the most enjoyable experiences of his career, and he decided to make his own stamp in the world of Mexican cuisine. rightfully so. However, very few of the chefs on this list can actually say they hold a degree in art, but Michael Tusk is the exception. After graduating from Tulane University with a degree in Art History, Michael took his appreciation for the classics to a venue where it could be best-appreciated by all: the kitchen.</p><p>With a long of list of achievements under his belt, it&#8217;s no surprise that Michael has secured a place on this list. As the winner of the &#8220;Best Chef: Pacific&#8221; award by the James Beard Foundation in 2011, Michael has put his talents to great use with his San Francisco restaurant, Quince.</p><p>Quince has received two Michelin stars and four stars from the <em>San Francisco Chronicle</em>, and has long been considered one of the best dining destinations in San Francisco since its opening in 2003. path, they&#8217;re typically not taken seriously; if they were, we would have more astronauts and firemen than we&#8217;d know what to do with. But not only has Brooke Williamson never wavered from her chosen childhood profession, she has also experienced massive success in pursuit of it. Brooke began her career as a teacher&#8217;s assistant at the Epicurean Institute of Los Angeles, then continued her education at the age of 18 working as a pastry assistant at Fenix at the Argyle Hotel.</p><p>Following a stint at Michael&#8217;s in Santa Monica, Brooke moved to the East Coast to work with another of our top-rated chefs, Daniel Boulud, at his eponymous restaurant in New York as an intern. Returning to L.A., Brooke was named executive chef at Boxer, then at Zax in Brentwood; it was during this time that she began to receive the critical acclaim she deserved, including nods from the <em>Los Angeles Times</em> and <em>Forbes</em> as a chef to watch. &#8220;the secret to good food is&#8230;good food.&#8221; Rather than relying on gimmicky variations or esoteric culinary items, Michael&#8217;s focus is simply on making the best food possible for his guests.</p><p>The winner of the James Beard Foundation&#8217;s &#8220;Best Chef: South&#8221; in 2010, Michael may not have received as many formal accolades as other members on this list, but that doesn&#8217;t mean that his abilities as a chef are not on par with theirs. It is because Michael focuses simply on making delicious food without the frills that he has had such continued success, both at Michael&#8217;s Genuine Food &amp; Drink in Miami and at The Restaurant at The Raleigh in South Beach.</p><p>While many of today&#8217;s chefs are focused more on building a brand name for themselves than on the quality of their creations, Michael&#8217;s culinary style runs refreshingly counter to the crowd. Giorgio Rapicavoli has elevated this particular style of cuisine to an art form unto itself. Depending on your thoughts on prenatal learning, you could make the argument that Giorgio&#8217;s culinary education started before he was even born; after all, while his mother was pregnant with him, she would watch hours upon hours of cooking shows. And after Giorgio was born, his two can&#8217;t-miss programs were &#8220;Sesame Street&#8221; and Julia Child&#8217;s shows.</p><p>At the age of 14, Giorgio convinced the manager of the restaurant where he worked as a busboy to let him work in the kitchen while still paying him busboy wages. His education continued with a short stint at Johnson &amp; Wales&#8217; culinary school, then in the Coral Gables, Florida restaurant scene. In 2012, Giorgio appeared on &#8220;Chopped&#8221; and, to nobody&#8217;s surprise, won the $10,000 prize. leap to owning their own space until they&#8217;ve established themselves working in a series of kitchens, and it usually takes until their thirties to do so. Not so with Gerard Craft. Gerard opened his first restaurant Niche at the age of 25, and it was such a successful effort that he has since opened six other restaurants, all before most chefs would open their first space. More impressive, Gerard did this <em>after</em> a career switch.</p><p>Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Gerard originally worked as a snowboard photographer, and it was on assignment in Salt Lake City that he discovered his true calling as a chef. Jumping headfirst into the culinary world, Gerard first worked at Bistro Toujours in Park City, Utah, then at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. food critics take nowadays or because they burn out, very few cooks have the longevity that Lidia Bastianich has enjoyed throughout her career. Born in then-Italy (now Yugoslavia), Lidia and her family were uprooted and brought to New York in 1958. Lidia began her culinary journey in 1971, working as the hostess at the restaurant she co-owned with her husband, Buonavia, in Queens. Lidia started training as the assistant chef a year later, and her knack for traditional Italian cuisine quickly became apparent. As Buonavia experienced success, Lidia took more of a central role at the couple&#8217;s second restaurant, Villa Secondo, giving live cooking demonstrations and earning the attention and praise of local critics.</p><p>In 1981, Lidia and her husband Felice spent every dime they had to open Felidia, and the gamble paid off: The <em>New York Times</em> gave Felidia three stars, and Lidia&#8217;s career rose to new heights. In 1993, Lidia&#8217;s son Joseph convinced his parents to open Becco in Manhattan&#8217;s Theater District; the result was a rousing success that led to Lidia appearing on Julia Child&#8217;s cooking show and, eventually, a friendship with Mario Batali. he started working with such notable chefs as Daniel Boulud and Dan Barber, Michael Anthony has done enough in his career to establish a reputation. Michael began his career in Tokyo working under Shizuyo Shima before moving to France in 1992 and attending L&#8217;ecole Ferrandi in Paris to study the culinary arts further. Fortunately for him, his degrees in business, French and Japanese made the transition from student to successful restaurateur smooth. By the time he was named executive chef at Gramercy Tavern, Michael had all the pieces in place to make his imprint.</p><p>After working his way up to Chef-Partner at Gramercy Tavern in 2011, Michael was named Executive Chef and Managing Director of Untitled and the Studio Caf&#233; at New York&#8217;s Whitney Museum; of course, this career trajectory is not surprising with such a highly-decorated chef. Michael has won numerous awards and accolades in his career: in 2002, he was named one of <em>Food &amp; Wine </em>magazine&#8217;s &#8220;Best New Chefs&#8221;; in 2007, he received the same designation from <em>TimeOut New York</em> magazine.
